The Big Picture

So, we’re doing this big catch up on our house and getting it to where we want it to be now. But what happens when that is all done?

We’re so glad you asked.

We are Dave Ramsey people. So much so that I (J) actually work in his creative department- which is funny, because the truth is O is the numbers person in our family. If you don’t know DR, let us give you the two cent education- Dave is a guy who made his millions in real estate in the 90s, then lost it all. He went bankrupt and realized through that painful process how much he hated debt and what it does to people- it keeps them enslaved instead of free to pursue their dreams. So Dave built a plan to help people get out of debt and then build their wealth using common sense principles. He rebuilt his millions using this plan, and is helping tons of people worldwide break free and chase their dreams.

So what does this mean for us?

Well, we don’t use debt. This means no credit cards, we don’t “buy now, pay later” on anything. We make budgets and we use the envelope system (which let me testify makes life so much simpler when you know exactly what you have, and have left, to spend on things like eating out!). We cashflow our projects. And most importantly, we’ve drunk the kool-aid and believe in the dream that you can own your house outright. Meaning, no mortgage. And for us, we want to do this aggressively, so we would have the house paid off in 4-6 years. That puts us right around 30, with no mortgage. So what then?

We want to pick up and move. Of course, that sounds silly when we just paid off a house. But not just move down the block. We want to spend more time in Costa Rica. As in, a year to begin with. We could rent our house and have a little income that way, and we can save and work there. We also have a business plan that we’re fleshing out, but suffice it to say that O’s love of numbers translates into him wanting to help young people gain wealth and firm financial footing early in life, to change their family trees (he really is like a few years younger Dave). And I want to help give people tools to get along better with one another, specifically married peoples and peoples in relationships. We’re not sure what that means just yet, but we’ve been getting ideas and can’t wait to fill in the lines a little more and of course share it with you.

Whew… we’ve talked with some of our friends and family about this dream, but putting it in print feels…. big. A little scary, but mostly exciting. So there you have it- what we hope to be the next chapter.
